As expected based on past rumors, the club announced on Tuesday that Polish international winger Przemysław Płacheta (pronounced SHEM-i-suave PWA-het-ah) has signed with the club, occupying the senior roster spot recently vacated with the Robert Taylor buyout.
Per the club's official release, "Płacheta has received his P-1 visa and can begin full team training on July 1 when his contract with Austin FC officially begins." He signed back in March as his contract with Oxford United of England's Championship was winding down, making him the final signing of the Rodolfo Borrell era.
Among the feathers in his cap: 12 Premier League appearances while with Norwich City in the 2021-2022 season, and seven appearances with Poland's senior national team.
According to Transfermarkt, he can play both left and right wing as well as left-sided midfielder. While he'll provide appreciable depth for Verde at multiple positions, and will reportedly be one of the speedier players on the team, questions remain as to how he'll fit in new head coach Jim Curtin's system — as Płacheta was brought in by Borrell with then-head coach Nico Estévez in mind.
“I’m really excited to begin a new chapter of my career in Austin,” said Płacheta in the press release announcing his arrival. “I can’t wait to make my debut and do everything I can to help the team make a push in the second half of the season. I also hope to use everything I learned during my six years in English football to help the team and make a positive impact in MLS.”
Płacheta will wear the No. 77 jersey — the same workaround-for-No.-7 that Emiliano Rigoni wore in his debut season for Austin. He wore No. 7 with Oxford, but has worn a host of numbers through his career, even rocking a No. 41 at one point.
Płacheta's first chance to appear for Austin comes Friday in a friendly against Querétaro F.C. as part of Verde's midseason slate of warm-up games, prior to resumption of the 2026 MLS season on July 22 against Seattle Sounders FC.
