Austin FC moves Owen Wolff to Sporting KC in massive cash trade
Our heads are spinning! Following two expected outbound moves on Wednesday morning, Austin FC followed with a third unexpected move that potentially sets Verde up for a summer signing.
In a morning of way too much news involving Austin FC outgoing players, the club dropped a bombshell on Wednesday morning following two already-reported moves, moving homegrown U22 midfielder and U.S. Men's National Team hopeful Owen Wolff to Sporting Kansas City.
Despite a 2026 season marred by injury following a breakout 2025 season, Wolff has long been considered Austin FC's most moveable young asset, and the in-league trade provides the windfall that roster-building-minded fans have been looking for.
Austin FC receives $4.5 million and up to an additional $3.1 million in conditional performance-based incentives, plus the club retains a sell-on percentage of a potential future transfer involving Wolff, per the club press release.
Interim head coach Davy Arnaud's packaged quote reveals more of the club-in-transition messaging that he gave with his comments on the Jayden Nelson trade, plus an unsubtle hint this is a move Wolff wanted.
Owen is a terrific young player. He began his professional career here in Austin, grew a tremendous amount, and endeared himself to the fanbase. As the club’s first-ever homegrown signing and youngest-ever player, Owen will always have a special place in Austin FC history.
“While it is not an easy decision to part ways with a player of Owen’s caliber, there have been substantive discussions since December of last year whereby the club expressed willingness to grant Owen his wish of playing elsewhere if an agreeable solution were to materialize. Our leadership team, with the support of our ownership group, was willing to honor his wishes so long as the offer matched the quality and trajectory of the player. We feel that this is the right move for the Club as we continue to position ourselves for long-term success.
Wolff's packaged quote was more sentimental.
"Austin FC will always be a special place for me. It’s where I began my career, and where I shared so many amazing moments with my teammates, my coaches, and the fans,” he said via press release. “I grew so much during my time here and I want to say thank you to everyone who played a part in that.”
As a reminder, the summer transfer window closes next Wednesday. Tonight, Austin FC plays Toluca in a Leagues Cup quarterfinal match now down three players who were on the squad for their previous match.
This is a developing story.
