Get ready for the strangest one of these about the strangest Austin FC game to be played yet.
For the first time ever, La Murga de Austin staged and led a walkout that left Q2 Stadium a decidedly different environment than it ever has been. The difference in vibe and overall atmosphere in-stadium was disconcerting to the point that it was difficult to tell an Austin FC match was going on at all.
Following the third song of the match, the band went silent, unfurling a banner that read "NO ICE IN THIS MELTING POT!" (previously snuck into the stadium in mid-2025). Following a few minutes of silence, supporters clad in all black filed out of the stadium, leaving a significant empty gap in the crowd in the dead middle of the Supporters Section of the stadium.
Despite losing their 12th man, Verde showed fire and fight against the undisputed top team in the league for most of the match, against all odds.
No one needed wonder what was lost when the heart left the middle of the south end, the balance of the game showed it.
La Murga de Austin posted a statement following the walkout:
On Saturday, La Murga de Austin walked out of Q2.
This was not an easy decision.
The heartbeat of Austin: the drums, the songs, the colors, the Carnaval – we bring all of it voluntarily, out of love for this club and this city.
We love this club. But love is not silent.
We are asking Austin FC to speak out – publicly, with conviction – against the injustice ICE is inflicting on the communities of Austin. The same communities the club says it supports. The same communities whose faces fill your marketing, whose voices fill your stadium, whose hands and hearts make this place what it is.
You ask us to grow the legend.
A legend will never grow without the community as its foundation. Foundations are fractured when the people holding everything up are being taken from their homes, their jobs, their families.
We hope our silence is heard as loudly as yours has been deafening to our community and harmful to the culture.
We will not be your soundtrack while you look away.
Would there have been more supporter-fueled gas in Brandon Vázquez's tank in the 73rd minute when he saw a breakaway chance to change the trajectory of the match?
Would the entire match have unfolded differently from much earlier?
I've seen lightly attended Austin FC matches. I've seen "mathematically eliminated" low-energy Austin FC matches.
I've never seen anything like this.
Brandon Vázquez did manage to fire one home at 76' to get Austin on the score sheet. It was a great goal, with great team play making it possible.
Q2 woke back up, but with an unfocused, less-potent version of the usual reaction to a home team goal. Surges in cheers sounded more like a significant away contingent than the home crowd Austinites have grown accustomed to hearing and feeling.
Stuver did what he could. They all did.
Until tonight, I never experienced an Austin FC home game where the team was missing its soul.
I hope I never have to again.
Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal)
At 66', Stuver went 1v1 against Hany Mukhtar on a breakaway and denied him what should have been a second goal, but as great as that was, Jon Gallagher deserves this for curling one in toward goal late in the first half. It didn't hit the back of the net, but it came within fingertips of doing so. It was even more of a beauty than it looked like on the broadcast.
One thing you might have missed
The biggest traffic jam of the night in the stadium on "Live Music Night" was created by a live band playing covers of (in order) "We Will Rock You," "Seven Nation Army," and "Enter Sandman." The lead singer calling for response on the first two songs found no purchase, but the concourse was completely clogged on the north end.
One nerdy tidbit
In the history of the club, tonight was the first time that supporters did not distribute and wave flags for the full 90', nor did they hang the banners fans are accustomed to seeing in the south end of the stadium with one exception.
On the middle capo stand, a "Keep Austin NEAT" banner was visible.
The reference, one assumed, was to drinks are "neat" when served without ice.
Where this fits into the season's narrative
If this is what the home atmosphere is like for the rest of the season, Austin is a shadow of the team I said "nobody in MLS should want to have to play against" on the latest Emergency Podcast.
A question we have heading into the press conference
How will Davy Arnaud respond to the difference in atmosphere? There isn't much else to ask about.
