World Cup Daily: Matches and storylines for July 7
With the U.S. now out of the World Cup, attention turns to Argentina vs. Egypt and Switzerland vs. Colombia. We're just hours away from knowing the last of the final eight teams.
The United States' 2026 World Cup run is over.
By now, you're aware that the U.S. lost 4-1 to Belgium on Monday night, once again stopping progression at the Round of 16. The expansion to 48 teams this year means that the U.S. did win a knockout round match — as did fellow Concacaf teams and co-hosts Mexico and Canada — but there will be no quarterfinal match against Spain.
It's Spain, because La Roja scored in stoppage time (via Mikel Merino) to dispatch Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, 1-0, to advance. Spain will now face Belgium in another all-UEFA quarterfinal for the right to play the France-Morocco winner.
Today, we get representatives from three different federations vying for two quarterfinal spots.
Argentina emerges from its scare against Cabo Verde to meet Egypt — which survived a PK shootout with Australia — in the penultimate Round of 16 match. Then, to close things out, Switzerland meets Colombia in Vancouver to set up a Saturday night showdown.
