If Verde lose behind closed doors, do they make a sound? (Austin FC 0, Querétaro FC 1)
In the first of three July matches serving as a warmup to the resumption of the 2026 season, Alí Ávila scored the match's lone goal in Querétaro FC's win over Austin FC.
On Friday, in a behind-closed-doors match at St. David's Performance Center in which news was principally coming from the visitors' side, Querétaro FC beat Austin FC, 1-0, to start a three-match midseason warmup ahead of the season's resumption July 22 against Seattle Sounders FC.
22-year-old Alí Ávila scored the match's lone goal per Querétaro's Twitter account, in a match spanning two 45-minute halves. The visitors' Instagram account provided the most proof-of-life evidence of the match, with Myrto Uzuni, Guilherme Biro, Jorge Alastuey, and Mateja Đorđević among the visible Verde players. This might be selective on Querétaro's part, but two of the photos showed Verde players grabbing visiting players eluding them while dribbling.
Curiously, the club didn't feature the match on its social media channels, possibly hinting at Wolffian secrecy from interim head coach Davy Arnaud, nor did it offer a post-match press release for media.
Austin FC resumes its midseason friendly schedule with a Wednesday, July 8 match against USL Championship side Sporting Club Jacksonville — the first day without World Cup action in nearly a month — and concludes that with a match at Q2 Stadium the following Wednesday at Charlotte FC.
Fans will get the opportunity to see the team in action, as it were, in a July 18 practice session at Q2 Stadium for season ticket holders.

French-Canadians are especially feeling it today, as both Canada and France quest for the quarterfinals. Morocco and Paraguay also have ambitions to get into the elite eight.
Dani Pereira, one of the original 2021 Austin FC players, has been traded to CF Montréal. It's bringing a hefty amount of GAM ... but at what cost to the midfield?
Spain and Portugal will attempt to qualify for what would be an epic Round of 16 match, while Algeria looks to ward off Wednesday's trend of African teams narrowly losing to European teams.
