There’s finally a Rumor of Intrigue for Austin FC this transfer window after a relatively quiet first few weeks of the offseason. Argentine journalist Germán García Grova, with TyC Sports and Radio La Red, claims that Austin FC is bidding $3.5 million to acquire Colombian striker Miguel Borja from River Plate.
MLS roster moves guru Tom Bogert has weighed in on his Twitter account as well, effectively only to share García Grova’s tweet and say that it’s be interesting if it happened. Specifically, he said, “Would be a big signing for ATX if they can get it done.”
As of Thursday afternoon, the club has not responded to my request for comment — but since the club tends to be more guarded than most about transfers in and out until they’re official, there’s not much to read into that.
García Grova’s tweet has a few more details. River would allegedly retain 20 percent of the rights, which might be more for MLS salary purposes than any interest from the Argentine giants in retaining the 30-year-old (for two more weeks, at least) striker.

Even though Transfermarkt sets his transfer value at €3.5 million (a bit off his historical €5 million peak1), García Grova’s tweet has River balking at the $3.5 million offer, though he also says in that tweet that Austin FC’s prepared to go higher.
Some of you are already sorting through this news with your own keen observations, but here are some impressions I’m getting and questions I’m having.
