Sources say Austin FC got its first win in over two months
Two separate sources confirmed to Verde All Day that Austin FC got its first win after five winless matches in a row. Facundo Torres led the way with a goal and an assist.
The great in-the-dark midseason friendly series rolls on for Austin FC, but Verde All Day confirmed via two sources that the team won its Wednesday scrimmage against Sporting Club Jacksonville, a new USL Championship team, 4-0.
The St. David's Performance Center match, first reported on by We Are Austin TV's Instagram account, featured Facundo Torres, who per their recounting had a goal and assist. Goals also came courtesy of Joseph Rosales, Jon Gallagher, and to close things out, an own goal.
While Sporting Jax (as they are known) are without a win so far this season — 0W 11L 4D through 15 inaugural-season matches — they have some familiar faces, including former Rangers, Colorado Rapids, and (more marginally) Liverpool defender Danny Wilson, as well as former Austin FC II regular and first-team drifter Antonio Gomez (of Sal and Tony's Pizza, Pasta, and Emergency Center Back Roster Activations fame in the waning days of the Josh Wolff era), and right back Harvey Neville, son of once and perhaps future MLS coach Phil Neville.
Verde's last win before Wednesday came May 3 — a 2-0 home triumph over St. Louis City SC featuring second-half goals from Christian Ramírez and Myrto Uzuni, though it's also the match in which Guilherme Biro tried to get away with slapping the ball into goal with his hand.
Since that win, Verde had a 2-2 draw at Minnesota United FC, a 5-0 loss at San Diego, a 2-1 home loss to Sporting Kansas City leading both head coach Nico Estévez and sporting director Rodolfo Borrell to be dismissed, and then a 3-0 loss at St. Louis to wilt into the midseason caesura. Verde also lost to Querétaro, 1-0, to start their run of three friendlies ahead of the resumption of the 2026 season on July 22 against Seattle.
Once again, Austin FC declined to put out a post-match press release as is their custom for regular-season and tournament matches, and the social media channels were silent. Similarly, Sporting Jax — who you think would have wanted to pump up challenging an MLS side on its socials — was conspicuously silent, making clear by now that the club's wanting radio silence around the three midseason matches. (Though it's also on brand for the Liga MX team to be "I do what I want.")
