O, Canada? Jayden Nelson gets unexpected World Cup lifeline following unfortunate Marcelo Flores injury
Jayden Nelson learned Friday that he'd missed the final cup for Canada's World Cup team. A teammate's unfortunate ACL injury puts Nelson back in the picture.
Austin FC's Jayden Nelson may still get the opportunity to feature for his country in the 2026 World Cup after all.
Following Friday's announcement that Nelson missed the final cut for Jesse Marsch's 26-man Canada squad, there's a roster spot open again — after Canada's camp confirmed Sunday that Tigres attacker Marcelo Flores tore his ACL in Saturday night's Concacaf Champions Cup final.
Flores came on as a 63rd-minute sub in the final, which Tigres lost to Toluca in PKs following a 1-1 stalemate, and suffered the non-contact injury inside of 15 minutes on the pitch trying to shake a defender en route to taking a shot on goal.
Flores confirmed the injury on Sunday on social media per Yahoo! Sports, grimly saying per translation, "My ACL is gone."
“We’re obviously disappointed for (Flores),” Marsch said, according to The Athletic. “All the guys had been asking about him all last night and all this morning. I was trying to give updates to the team on where things were at. We were all fearing that he wouldn’t have something like this, because it obviously didn’t look like a good injury. But our hearts are with him.”
Flores was selected in part for his versatility; like Nelson, Flores can play either wing, but can also play as a striker, which was to help Marsch given the lean forward crew he's rolling with currently.
Several elements work in Nelson's favor for team selection — first, he's reportedly still in camp with Canada despite not making the squad, and the other two remaining non-selection campers, Ralph Priso and Zorhan Bassong, are defenders.
It's possible, though, that Junior Hoilett, turning 36 next month and a veteran of Canada's 2022 World Cup squad, could be tapped over Nelson. Another possibility is former Columbus Crew striker Jacen Russell-Rowe, now playing for Toulouse in France's top division.
Marsch indicated, per The Athletic and in at least one other news report, that because FIFA doesn't require a replacement to be named until 24 hours before Canada's June 12 opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina, he might not name a replacement in the coming days.
Canada will play tuneup matches against Uzbekistan on Monday night in Edmonton and against Ireland on Friday night in Montréal.
Nelson remains the only hope for a Verde representative in this year's World Cup barring any new strangle developments with the Uruguay team. Contender Fernando Torres, who looked the best chance to be an Austin FC player in the World Cup even last week, was informed prior to coach Marcelo Bielsa's official squad selection earlier today that he would not be part of the plans. Bielsa also controversially left 39-year-old Luis Suarez off the roster, after the Inter Miami striker walked back his earlier retirement-from-international-play announcement in hopes of getting one last trip to the quadrennial tournament.
Suarez, of course, made his mark in the 2010 World Cup with an intentional handball to block what would have been a game-winning goal for Ghana in the quarterfinal. It turned out to be impactful; Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty awarded for the red-carded infraction, and Uruguay went on to advance in PKs, then losing both the semifinal against Netherlands and the third-place game against Germany.

We continue on our goals-against tour in the first 15 matches of 2026 with some real doozies. Settle in; some of these are difficult (but we remind you, instructive) watches.
Austin FC has a three-match losing streak going, outscored 10-1 in that stretch, but it's mercifully paused for a two-month break. Yet interim head coach Davy Arnaud was encouraged by what he saw Saturday.
