Currently, Portland Timbers FC sit right above the playoff line. But one writer familiar with the team and the season it's had thinks they will finish even better.

The Timbers will also be Verde's Decision Day opponent, and it will take a few wins on Verde's part to be consequential, but it's possible that both teams will go into that match needing a result to make the playoffs.
But here, in the present, Verde's 14th in the West on 21 points, seven points below the Timbers, making a win in this road match especially helpful in the quest for the playoffs. It means that they only have one striker available! Vincent Janssen picked up a second yellow last weekend in LA, which leaves Gage Guerra as the only natural 9 who can start tonight. However, David Da Costa played as a false 9 against Puebla in Leagues Cup, so that option is also available.
With Martí Cifuentes getting settled in as manager, what does he bring to the table, and how is he changing what the Timbers are doing?
Cifuentes brings a consistent tactical identity built around high possession and high pressing. He's tightening up Portland's out of possession structure and making them more difficult to beat. However, due to the congested schedule, this past week was the first opportunity he's had to run a full training session.
Right now, the Timbers are hovering just above the playoff line. What's the feeling among fans — will the Timbers make the playoffs, and if so, how far can they go (and how important is it really)?
The expectation, here today on August 29th, is that the Timbers will make the playoffs and avoid the play-in game. I think they could win a first-round series, but their ceiling is a conference final appearance. There are serious roster needs (right wing, right back, center back, and striker) that need to get addressed before the window closes on Wednesday. If those additions aren't made in time, Portland's ceiling for 2026 is significantly lowered.
