Austin FC, moving up in the MLS Re-Entry Draft Stage 1 order by trading with two different MLS teams, used the No. 1 pick to acquire former FC Dallas winger Jader Obrian on Thursday.
The maneuvering was made possibly, in part, because former Austin FC SuperDraft pick Kipp Keller opted out of this Re-Entry Draft, allowing his rights to be moved to FC Cincinnati on Wednesday for a third-round Super Draft pick.
Austin then packaged that pick and its No. 5 Re-Entry Draft Stage 1 pick to Toronto FC — Verde’s trading partner last summer to acquire veteran defender Matt Hedges — to get the top spot in the draft.
And then they turned it into Obrian.
