I had a dream last night about an Austin FC press conference.
It was after a fictional home Austin FC match against Orlando City in which Verde went up 2-0, gave a pair of goals, scored another two goals, and then gave up two late for a 4-4 final score. After the match, Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff had the assembled media sit down at a table, went around and said something nice about each person and their coverage, and then disappeared before we could ask him a question.
I don’t expect Wolff to do this on Saturday night — there are MLS rules about this, after all — but I do expect the questions to get increasingly pointed and the fans to be increasingly agitated should the current winless streak extend to eight.
That assumes, of course, Verde loses to FC Dallas tonight.
Then again, there’s increasing hope that Verde does well tonight, thanks in part to a Dallas lineup missing an injured Jesus Ferreira and a number of other players. When Verde last faced a Toros lineup that was less than full strength at Q2, it was June 22. Austin’s 3-0 win that night kicked off a 4-1-1 midseason stretch that’s arguably the best stretch of play the team’s had in the last 50 or so matches, dating back to when the peaks of the 2022 season began to fall off a bit.
