It happened again.
It happened differently, with two hope-giving late-game goals giving Austin FC a 3-2 lead away with mere minutes left in the match against Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon.
Yet once again, Verde ceded a goal in the final 15-minute block of a match — their sixth such goal allowed this season — transforming the lead into what ultimately stood as a 3-3 draw.
And that led Austin FC head coach Nico Estévez to borrow from Spinal Tap.
"We did something that was very, very difficult playing away," he said. "That is losing 2-1, to go and score two goals and come back to 3-2. And there are things that we've talked about that we're still missing. And I said the other day ... the line between winning and losing is very thin."
It's not quite "There's a fine line between stupid and clever," and in soccer, the line between winning and losing is more of a band that encompasses all draws — even the feel good draws like Austin FC's had the last three out of four times out. But the quote encompasses Estévez's frustrations with his team not quite being able to do enough to win even given encouraging performances showing it's not as bad as its 1W 3L 4D record currently indicates.
