World Cup Daily: Matches and storylines for June 11
The World Cup is finally here! To kick off a daily feature we're doing because it's the duty of every soccer content creator, we're starting with Group A.
Maybe it's not quite what you envisioned when the U.S., Mexico, and Canada were awarded co-hosting rights to the 2026 World Cup back in 2018, but the week is finally upon us. Perhaps you've done some preliminary immersion already, or perhaps you've decided now is the time to embark on your World Cup preparation.
Let me, in the spirit of all soccer content creators moved to do something during this special time of the four-year cycle, weigh in on this year's extravaganza.
Before getting into what I'm doing here, I do want to start by pointing out some work that my colleagues in the soccer space have contributed.

First off, you probably have these bookmarked already, butThe Athletic andThe Guardian are generating content ahead of the tournament and will throw considerable resources (with really talented writers) toward coverage.
Matt Doyle did an article on his Tactics Free Zone site subtitled, “How to sound smart for all 48 teams,” with offerings like, “If you think of Pavel Sulc as more of a second forward than a true No. 10, then it's easier to understand how they're able to create danger off those long-balls to Patrick Schick (for Czechia), and “You know they're going to try to progress up the left side. One of the 8s or 10s has to read that quicker and be better about dropping into the pocket so Tim Ream has some options beside just playing it wide to Jedi every time” for the U.S. You know, nerd things. (He also did a tiers article which has a few surprises but is generally in line with how I'm seeing the tournament.)
The Saudis, staying in Austin, made Austin look good since they're at the Four Seasons and the closest chain to that fancy-pants hotel isGus's World Famous Fried Chicken, which is perhaps more of a chain than you might realize.
(In other words, World Cup coverage that is very much up my alley.)
How we’ll do this
Each day in this initial block, I'll unfurl each group as it starts, and provide predictions that certainly won't come back to bite me. As the tournament progresses, we'll have an eye on the standings and how top teams and bubble teams might move.
Note that all teams are listed with their current FIFA world rankings. All match times are CT.
Group A
Predictions
Projected winner: Mexico (14)
Projected runner-up: South Korea (25)
Projected 3rd-place team: Czechia (40)
Projected 4th-place team: South Africa (60)
Today's matches
Mexico vs. South Africa: Thursday, June 11, 2 pm (Mexico City)
South Korea vs. Czechia: Thursday, June 11, 9 pm (Guadalajara)
Future matches
Czechia vs. South Africa: Thursday, June 18, 11 am (Atlanta)
Mexico vs. South Korea: Thursday, June 18, 8 pm (Guadalajara)
Czechia vs. Mexico: Wednesday, June 24, 8 pm (Mexico City)
South Africa vs. South Korea: Wednesday, June 24, 8 pm(Guadalajara)
Most compelling narrative
Whether Mexico can advance beyond its customary Round of 16 place (where it's finished every World Cup between 1994 and 2018 before crashing out at the group stage level in 2022).
Player to watch
It's weird to give this to a fourth-place team player, but South Africa's Mbekezeli Mbokazi just got voted onto the 2026 MLS All-Star team. Like Lionel Messi, he'll play in the World Cup before featuring in Charlotte – he just might not do it for as many games as Messi.
Where to watch
While we must mention the Austin FC-organized watch party (dubbed Soccer Celebration) on Auditorium Shores, this is a good opportunity to remind you that Takoba (1411 E. 7th) is opening its doors for this year's World Cup, and has been particularly lively for El Tri matches.

Jim Curtin, targeted as a top Austin FC head coaching hire per our reporting, was officially named club skipper on Monday. He'll start following the close of the 2026 season.
Austin FC has had just two head coaches in its history, not counting current interim Davy Arnaud. One key metric tells us that Verde could be doing better with one of its presumed target head coaches.
Jayden Nelson, vying for a suddenly-vacant spot on Canada's World Cup roster, scored in stoppage time on Monday. He'll have one last chance on Friday to make an impression.

Sickos Committee, which has emerged to do some really delightful soccer coverage on top of its college football coverage, did a four-parter on all 48 teams, which includes tidbits like Best Name on the Team, national dishes of note, and closest chain restaurant to the team's home base in North America.
