World Cup Daily: Matches and storylines for June 29
South Africa became the first team knocked out of the knockout rounds this World Cup. Three more teams, including at least one of the top seven in the world, will join them on Monday.
We only got one match on Sunday, and it was a somewhat frustrating watch (especially for fans of Canada, scoring, and competent refereeing), but it worked out in the end, as Stephen Eustáquio delivered a stoppage-time laser to allow Les Rouges to get out of Los Angeles with a 1-0 win. Next stop? Houston on July 4 to face the winner of Netherlands-Morocco. If they survive that, they get one of France, Germany, Paraguay or Sweden — in other words, probably France. It doesn't get easier from here.
Speaking of not getting easier, Brazil faces Japan at noon (why we couldn't have had that match as part of a Sunday doubleheader, I would ask FIFA), Germany squares off against Paraguay at the sure-why-not time of 3:30 pm, and then at 8, Netherlands-Morocco with the chance to upend a co-host on the other side.
