World Cup Daily: Matches and storylines for June 14
Saturday went very well for both the U.S. and Canada teams, despite being idle. Sunday promises four matches, including the debut of some contenders and dark horses.
Saturday was an amazing World Cup day for both the U.S. and Canada, and they didn't even play.
First, Qatar did Canada a serious solid, hanging around at Switzerland's extended invitation to equalize deep in stoppage time, ending that contest 1-1 and effectively resetting Group B back to full equilibrium. After semi-botching its opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada is in a much better position to win its group and play matches in its home nation up until the quarterfinals than it was 24 hours ago.
And then, Türkiye looked to be the U.S.'s biggest group stage obstacle, but got beat in an absurdly late Saturday night match against Australia, which gave the U.S. plenty of low-block film to consider.
And in the midst of all that, thanks to the Knicks closing out its NBA Finals win, the Spurs can't hurt me with late-game collapses anymore, though the day also gave us a Brazil-Morocco match that ended in a draw, did not budge their respective No. 6 and No. 7 world rankings, and featured a particularly emphatic Vini Jr. goal, and Scotland besting Haiti.
Sunday's got four intriguing matches for us and the introduction of Groups E and F into the proceedings.
Group E
Predictions
Projected winner: Germany (10)
Projected runner-up: Ecuador (24)
Projected 3rd-place team: Côte d'Ivoire (33)
Projected 4th-place team: Curaçao (82)
Today's matches
Germany vs. Curaçao, Sunday, June 14, noon (Houston)
Côte d'Ivoire vs. Ecuador, Sunday, June 14, 6 pm (Philadelphia)
Future matches
Germany vs. Côte d'Ivoire: Saturday, June 20, 3 pm (Toronto)
Ecuador vs. Curaçao: Saturday, June 20, 7 pm (Kansas City)
Curaçao vs. Côte d'Ivoire: Thursday, June 25, 3 pm (Philadelphia)
Ecuador vs. Germany: Thursday, June 25, 3 pm (East Rutherford, N.J.)
Most compelling narrative
Ecuador is unbeaten in 19 matches, going back to a September 2024 1-0 loss against Brazil, and has one of the most highly-regarded defenses in the tournament. Is this really a legitimate dark horse candidate to win this World Cup, or will Côte d'Ivoire or Germany finally break the streak in the group stage and put Ecuador on a more difficult path.
Player to watch
After a remarkable season with lots of Kai Havertz in it, we're ready to see more Kai Havertz, only in Germany's colors.
Group F
Predictions
Projected winner: Netherlands (8)
Projected runner-up: Japan (18)
Projected 3rd-place team: Sweden (39)
Projected 4th-place team: Tunisia (45)
Today's matches
Netherlands vs. Japan, Sunday, June 14, 3 pm (Jerryworld)
Sweden vs. Tunisia, Sunday, June 14, 9 pm (Monterrey)
Future matches
Netherlands vs. Sweden: Saturday, June 20, noon (Houston)
Tunisia vs. Japan: Saturday, June 20, 11 pm (Monterrey)
Japan vs. Sweden: Thursday, June 25, 6 pm (Jerryworld)
Tunisia vs. Netherlands: Thursday, June 25, 6 pm (Kansas City)
Most compelling narrative
By now, if you're following World Cup storylines closely, you know that the mathematician who selected the last three World Cup winners correctly picked the Oranje to win it all this time. That pick seems a little further afield than the previous ones; just how will it fare given the Netherlands' decently challenging group?
Player to watch
Since we're on the Netherlands topic here, starting with today, I'm wondering how Donyell Malen's excellent half-season at Roma will translate onto the World Cup stage, starting with Sunday's marquee matchup against Japan.
Where to watch
Easy Tiger's South Lamar location has declared itself Austin's hub for Germany and the Netherlands, making this an ideal location to post up for a doubleheader from noon to 5 pm if you choose.
What to read
Jason Davis has been putting in the work on his Soccer Eagle site, confessing to watching just eight minutes of the Knicks' triumph but weaving that into a positive development for the U.S. men's national team. I mean, if that's what it takes, sure.
