This season is a book we've just begun reading: Assessing Austin FC narratives, three games in

Is the first chapter of a book enough to understand if it'll be a good read? We take what's effectively the first chapter of the 2026 and explore.

Let’s say you’re reading a 12-chapter book and you’re about a chapter in. You probably have a good sense of the protagonist, the setting, and at least the sketch outline of the plot. You can probably also tell, with some certainty, if you’re engaged enough in the book to want to keep reading.

Three matches into the 2026 season, and we’re now at that 1/12 juncture of the season (technically, 8.82%) — still too small of a sample size to truly understand what this team is doing similarly or differently from the season prior, but with enough narrative present to begin shaping the story.

So let’s explore.
