Monday’s announcement that Oleksandr Svatok will be the latest Austin FC player signed to the club is a mostly welcome development. You could argue that Austin FC sporting director Rodolfo Borrell’s three summer transfer window finds — Svatok, plus the just-feted Osman Bukari and the soon-to-arrive Mikkel Desler — will quickly emerge as three of the four best players on the Verde roster, with only one of the three taking up a designated player spot.
But there’s a downside to that. Do the math, and you’ll see that the addition of three senior players to the existing roster means all 20 senior roster spots are occupied. A few supplemental spots exist, but as Borrell said yesterday in assessing how the rest of his summer will go, “So this means that to be able to bring somebody, somebody will have to go out.”
It’s probably a useful time to talk about who’s on the roster and what could possibly happen.
