Austin FC sporting director Rodolfo Borrell couldn’t sleep.
Several weeks ago, following the disappointing draw with LA Galaxy that ended around 1:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, Borrell finished up at Q2 Stadium close to 3 a.m., went home, had trouble sleeping for the next few hours, and around 9 a.m, went over to St. David’s Performance Center where the team’s technical staff headquartered.
Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff was already there.
“Although it was a day off for the team and everybody, Josh was already at the office … and he was devastated.”
Borrell used that anecdote to help illustrate Wolff’s dedication to the job and to the club’s success — something that goalkeeper Brad Stuver also talked about in a candid moment following last Wednesday’s 3-0 win over a D.C. United.
It’s clear that much of the raison d'être for Tuesday’s media availability with the new sporting director was to assuage fan concerns about Wolff, which grew in the wake of a brutal 10-match winless streak in all competitions that spanned two and a half months and spawned a “Wolff Out” movement dedicated to seeing the team’s first-ever head coach become the team’s first-ever ex-head coach.
