The destination appears to be Bolton Wanderers F.C. in England, though the club has not yet confirmed the move. - Author: Phil West - Tags: 2026 season, austin fc, cj fodrey, jayden nelson, roster building On Saturday night, media members in the Austin FC locker room saw Jayden Nelson saying goodbye to teammates, leaving them to wonder about the destination and the circumstances. With an official press release from the club still pending, the Athletic's Tom Bogert reported Monday that Nelson is heading to Bolton Wanderers F.C., in England's second-division Championship, on a deal worth at least $1 million. News of the move comes a day before a "special press conference" on Tuesday morning, which we presume to be the unveiling of [new sporting director Khaled El-Ahmed](https://verdeallday.com/report-khaled-el-ahmad-named-austin-fc-chief-soccer-officer/), though interim head coach Davy Arnaud was opaque about that when asked in Monday's press availability. Nelson, who joined the club in December 2025 (a week before Christmas), in advance of the 2026 season, came over in a trade with Vancouver Whitecaps FC — in part because Nelson was looking to get more playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup. At the time the deal was announced, the club reported, "Austin sent $700,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM), $550,000 in 2027 GAM, and its 2026 MLS SuperDraft First Round pick to Vancouver. Vancouver may also retain a percentage of a future trade or transfer fee if the player is traded or sold above a certain monetary amount." Early-season injuries kept Nelson from getting the level of playing time he would have liked, and [told Austin media](https://verdeallday.com/morning-after-atxvdal-081626-davy-arnaud-jayden-nelson/) following the Aug. 16 loss to FC Dallas, "I was dealing with issues with my body I never experienced before." Ironically, even though Nelson was initially left off Canada's World Cup roster, it was [another injury](https://verdeallday.com/jayden-nelson-canada-world-cup-call-up-still-possible/) — an ACL tear suffered by Marcelo Flores — that opened the door for him. He scored a goal in a [key pre-World Cup tune-up match](https://verdeallday.com/jayden-nelson-scores-canada-vs-uzbekistan-world-cup-roster/) and became a late addition, getting sub minutes in Les Rouges' knockout round loss to Morocco. He added in Aug. 16 locker room exchange, "Now that I feel healthy, I'm ready to go. It's obviously hard to get into the squad right now with guys playing well, but I want to play really bad. So I'll say the ambition I got from the World Cup, knowing that I want more, knowing I can play with the best players in the world, I want to come back to Austin to really show that to the fans." However, six weeks after becoming the first Austin FC player to feature in the World Cup, he'll be leaving Austin FC. Nelson hinted in the Aug. 16 exchange that it was hard to get into the squad — part of that stemming with the switch from head coach Nico Estévez to interim head coach Davy Arnaud. Arnaud's newly implemented playing style utilizes wingbacks in a 5-2-3 formation, dispensing with the more traditional pure wingers that Estévez relied on in favor of two-way wingbacks playing as wingers on attack but dropping back to defend. Tensions between Arnaud and Nelson manifested during a July 25 away match at Houston, in which it appeared Nelson would enter as a late sub but then was sent back to the bench in favor of , with Arnaud [saying post-match](https://verdeallday.com/morning-after-houvatx-072526-davy-arnaud-ilie-sanchez/) that Nelson "just wasn't in a good mindset to come into the game." Both Arnaud and Nelson gave assurances in media availabilities after the episode that it was a misunderstanding and that they were on good terms with one another. And yet, 30 days after that episode, Nelson is reportedly no longer with Austin FC. Nelson last appeared for Austin FC's in last Wednesday's win against Seattle, deployed more centrally in an attacking winger role than he typically does.
