At this time last year, the LA Galaxy was dealing with injured and unproductive designated players, supporters actively boycotting the team over maligned club president Chris Klein, and setting upon a bumpy course that resulted in a 13th-place finish in the West.
Oh, the difference that nearly $20 million in transfer fees on two transformative players can make.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s unusual 12:55 p.m. CT kickoff at Q2 Stadium, as Austin FC prepared to host the conference-leading Galaxy, head coach Josh Wolff acknowledged how good the Galaxy has become on offense.
But even with the offseason addition of new designated players Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec — additions that have clicked noticeably for elite playmaker Riqui Puig and Golden Boot candidate Dejan Joveljić — Wolff maintains the current West leaders are not, to use his word, “invincibles.”
“The 2024 version of the Galaxy is very different,” Wolff assessed. “So I think we have to we have to be very aware of who they are today.”
