Catching you up on the MLS Playoff first round that started Oct. 25

It takes a long time to get through a best-of-three first-round series. Four of the eight are tied at one game a piece headed into Friday and Saturday's matches.

There have been some surprises in MLS this week. The two biggest ones have nothing to do with play on the field — Jim Curtin was dismissed as the Philadelphia Union’s coach after 10 seasons, amassing a 1.52 PPG average over 420 matches, and the Houston Dynamo declined to pick up Hector Herrera’s 2025 option, meaning that his final action with the club was getting a red card in a playoff-eliminating loss for spitting in the direction of a referee.

But starting on Friday night, and continuing with three back-to-back-to-back matches on Saturday afternoon and evening, MLS playoff soccer is back to help balm whatever else might be ailing us this week.

Here’s what you’re in for.
