But two goals from Christian Ramírez brought the visitors an epic win. - Author: Phil West - Tags: 2026 season, austin fc, match recap With a five-match unbeaten streak on the line, Austin FC traveled to play the top team in the West on Sunday, got two goals from Christian Ramírez, had a penalty kick saved by the crossbar, and hung on for the 2-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday at BC Place. Myrto Uzuni did not make the matchday 20, despite what Austin FC interim head coach Davy Arnaud told media on Wednesday night about his expected return. Facundo Torres was the sole designated player starting, with Ramírez replacing Brandon Vázquez in the starting lineup, and Jorge Alastuey replacing Ilie Sánchez as the only other switched out player from Colorado's starting XI. That included an identical back line of Jon Bell, Guilherme Biro, and Mikkel Desler. Vancouver tested Austin quite early with long balls trying to force one-on-one situations, which sent Verde players scrambling but up to the test initially. Brian White got off a sixth-minute shot, but Brad Stuver was able to get down and save that relatively easy. Desler got called in commission on several occasions to eliminate threats, including a sliding tackle to stop Andres Cubas getting a point-blank shot on goal in the 23rd minute on a give-and-go play with Ryan Gauld. But, against the run of play, Ramírez got out on a fast break started with a long Stuver throw, after nearly spilling but ultimately collecting a corner kick, assisted by Facundo Torres with Jon Gallagher getting the initial ball from Stuver and feeling it up the line. In the post-goal aftermath, Verde players picked up some needless yellow cards — first for Bell, fouling Brian White, and then Joseph Rosales, fouling Gauld. But Besard Šabović did one better, falling on top of Gauld inside the box to knock Gauld over. Victor Rivas immediately whistled for the penalty, which Gauld took, but caromed it off the crossbar, failing to equalize. That's now two unsuccessful PKs against Verde compared to three made for the season — four if you could Leagues Cup. But Verde made it to halftime still up 1-0\. Within two minutes of the restart, Biro got a yellow card for a foul on Cheikh Sabaly that will take him out of the match against Dallas (for yellow card accumulation — hold that thought). Within four, Gauld found White with a pass that split two defenders (Bell and Rosales), leaving him released to easily get a ball past Stuver for the equalizer. Within five, Gauld had an opportunity to take the lead and hit another ball of the crossbar. (Note to Gauld: This game does not involve a crossbar challenge.) The Whitecaps continued to put more pressure on Verde's defenders, getting Gauld another shot in front of goal near the hour mark that Stuver was able to snuff out — which was a fine how-do-you-do for Oleksandr Svatok, brought in for Bell just before that sequence to shore up the back line. But once again, against the run of play, Ramírez scored again, this time fed with a Rosales pass from the wing hit with power and precision, set up in turn by E-Torres. Arnaud made F-Torres' wish of dual nines — expressed in the locker room after the draw against Colorado on Wednesday – come true with the insertion of Vázquez and Žan Kolmanič for Alastuey and Rosales in the 65th. The match had some testy moments after that, some not even involving Biro – namely, an Emmanuel Sabbi foul on Gallagher leading to a free kick just outside the 18 in the 80th. Vázquez took that, and two minutes later, had one of his best chances of the season, getting in fine position inside the box following a giveaway, but with Mathias Laborda blocking the shot. Chess followed, with Vancouver head coach Jesper Sørensen putting in Ryan Elloumi for Cubas to get some more offense in, while Arnaud counted by getting Ramírez off for Przemysław Płacheta and Brendan Hines-Ike for Desler. The hosts continued to press forward for an equalizer, helped by Biro getting a second yellow in the 90th and then kicking the ball away as one last little needle to impress himself upon the game. (Stuver made sure he got off the field, supportively.) Austin escaped two literal last-minute scares — a Yadaly Diaby corkscrewing shot that Stuver had to slap away, and then a corner kick Laborda headed just over the bar — getting a win that not many people predicted would happen. ## Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal) It might have just been the crossbar saving the PK. Soccer! (And Austin was actually DOWN to an 8% deserved win by the end.) ## One nerdy tidbit Gauld's miss is only the second PK that Stuver "saved" this season, following the wild Kelvin Yeboah double-take in [Verde's draw against Minnesota](https://verdeallday.com/match-recap-minvatx-051026/) on May 10\. ## Where this fits into the season's narrative After two frustrating home draws, an unlikely away win extends Verde's unbeaten streak to six and elevated Verde past Seattle to 13th in the West. ## A question we have heading into the press conference Was this the blueprint for the Leagues Cup knockout match against Toluca executed better? *Verde All Day is a reader-supported online publication covering Austin FC.
