At the Whistle: Seattle Sounders FC 1, Austin FC 2
Austin FC only retained one of 11 starters from its loss three nights ago against FC Dallas. This match saw Verde fare better against a flagging Sounders team and get its first road win of 2026.
You wanted rotation? You got rotation. And it worked.
Austin FC, only retaining one of the 11 starters from Sunday's 2-1 loss to FC Dallas (and not the one you'd guess), went to Seattle with an emphatically rotated lineup against the Sounders. One of the starters, Facundo Torres, scored his first goal for the club in four months, and Guilherme Biro found a game-winning set piece goal, outlasting the hosts 2-1 at Lumen Field on Wednesday night.
Only captain Ilie Sánchez remained a constant in a rotated lineup that included the first-ever start for goalkeeper Damian Las, a welcome start for speedsters Jayden Nelson and Przemysław Płacheta, potentially confidence-building starts for midfielder Jorge Alastuey and nominal striker CJ Fodrey (playing as a left winger), and a homecoming for center back Jon Bell, who played with the Sounders last season.
After some early uncertain moments in the heavily rotated lineup — but looking to be playing a 3-4-3 variation of the system interim head coach Davy Arnaud instituted — Verde got their first real chance in the 19th minute, with Nelson trying to feed Brandon Vázquez with a pass that was a bit beyond him.
In the 26th minute, after additional aborted chances with Nelson and Alastuey in playmaker roles, Vázquez collected a pass — as it turns out, in a slightly offside position — and hit a shot that pinged off the post.
Four minutes later, the Sounders' Albert Rusnak had a shooting opportunity that was aptly blocked by Ilie, saving a potential goal.
Płacheta engineered a 32nd-minute corner kick opportunity, but that only resulted in a Vázquez header attempt that went over the bar.
The Sounders, plagued by injuries, had another concerning one late in the first half when Jackson Ragen went down with a (mostly) non-contact knee injury, but got the sideline under his own power and returned. (Ragen would eventually come off in the 69th.)
Nelson was able to earn a free kick near halftime, and that play turned into two consecutive corner kicks — the second resulting in an Alastuey shot that banged off the post, followed by a Žan Kolmanič shot collected by Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas.
In first-half stoppage time, Rusnak had another go from distance that went just wide — but the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Seattle came in with one halftime sub, bringing in Snyder Brunell — a starter in Seattle's prior match against Austin — for Sebastian Gomez.
In the 53rd minute, Płacheta won a corner kick but should have won so much more, absorbing a rough challenge from Nouhou that could have resulted in a dangerous free kick placement just outside the box.
Two minutes later, Paul Rothrock got off one of the Sounders' most dangerous chances of the night, which Las was able to handle.
At close to the hour mark, Arnaud made his first sub, putting in Guilherme Biro for Fodrey, which moved Kolmanič out to wingback.
Las was tested again shortly after that sub, with Danny Musovski forcing Las into a diving save. At this stage of the match, Nelson and Płacheta also had chances from distance but were unable to get enough power on their shots to trouble Thomas.
Finally, in the 66th, Verde broke through, with Nelson playing Kolmanič down the line with a pass, who then sent a cross into a wide-open Torres, who was able to sidefoot his shot past Thomas for the opener.
Mikkel Desler made his return to play at the 70-minute mark in a double sub with Ervin Torres, spelling Nelson and Płacheta.
Kalani Kossa-Rienzi had a near-goal in the 76th, getting off a shot that just went wide. Two minutes later, Rothrock went wide with a shot even closer and more dangerous.
After Kolmanič absorbed hard contact, it appeared his night was through, so Arnaud opted for a pair of vić subs, getting in Mateja Đorđević and Besard Šabović in for Kolmanič — which make Biro the match's third left wingback — and Ilie.
Pressure continued to mount for Verde with an 85th-minute Rusnak shot that stung Las' palms, but then E-Torres got his own scary shot a minute later threatening Thomas — helping secure a corner kick that resulted in Biro's wild karate kick putaway, assisted by Vázquez.
In the 90th, though, Rusnak was able to play a free kick into 19-year-old Stuart Hawkins, who lost his defender, rose up to meet the ball, and headed it in to give the Sounders life.
Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal)
Alastuey's near-goal just before halftime was the most decisive play any Verde player managed all half.
Worst Verde moment (that wasn't a goal allowed)
In the 8th minute, Kolmanič decided to test the keeper — his own, sending a hard, fast pass his way that very nearly turned into an own goal disaster. Fortunately, Las was able to recover the ball and kick it out of danger. But that was very nearly a terrible way to spot the hosts an early goal and go down 1-0.
One thing you might have missed
A replay of the winning goal showed that Vázquez may have been offside before he sent the assist into Biro. That's a VAR oops if so, but also, an indicator that Vázquez still has to work on his timing.
One nerdy tidbit
It took until the first minute of stoppage time for Austin to get its first shot on target.
Where this fits into the season's narrative
The win halts another three-match losing streak — with the prior three-match losing streak also ending with a win over Seattle. There won't be any more matches against Seattle, though — Verde will need to find other opponents it can beat.
Perhaps more significantly, it's Verde's first road win of 2026 — better late than never.
A question we have heading into the press conference
Why all this rotation?
