Austin FC's Jayden Nelson dribbling a ball, guarded by RSL's Xavier Gozo

At the Whistle: Real Salt Lake 2, Austin FC 1

Verde went to a stadium on Saturday night that hasn't been so friendly to them in recent years. That trend continued, though not be the lopsided margin of years past.

In its second road match of 2026, Austin FC got a goal from Jon Bell against Real Salt Lake, a puzzling own goal from Oleksandr Svatok, and then gave up a late goal from newcomer Stijn Spierings, falling 2-1 to Real Salt Lake at America First Field in Sandy, Utah, on Saturday night.

After losing four of its previous five matches in Sandy, Verde looked close to securing their first draw away in the series before RSL was able to return results to the Utah norm late in the contest.

But considering the prior two years' margins were 3-1 and 5-1, this was something of an improvement.

Verde's lineup had a couple of surprises necessitated by the Guilherme Biro red card and the Dani Pereira injury — namely, Nicolás Dubersarsky starting in a double pivot with Ilie Sánchez, and Bell starting at left back, with Joseph Rosales remaining slotted in at his now-customary (now) (for now) (maybe for the whole season?) right wing position.

It only took 19 seconds for Austin FC to try stuff, with Jayden Nelson bombing down the left wing and sending in a pass that just missed Facundo Torres in front of goal. Two minutes later, another long ball sent in forced Justen Glad to head the ball out of bounds, which a diving Rafael Cabral couldn't quite get to, leading to a Verde corner.

Some tight reffing led to an early yellow card on Jon Gallagher, but also led to the free kick foul from Glad on Nelson leading to the first goal, with Torres lofting a ball into the box that Bell headed past Cabral through traffic.

Six minutes later, though, Noel Caliskan sent a ball from near the endline into the goalmouth, and Svatok inexplicably fired the ball directly into goal — a finish reminiscent of Amro Tarek's own goal in the disaster against Violette in the infamous 2022 Concacaf Champions League game.

Later in the half, Rosales managed to goad Morgan Guilavogui into a yellow card, after extracurriculars advanced to Guilavogui shoving Rosales and Rosales selling the fall by coming completely off his feet and landing on his back. (Reminder: The Oscars are tomorrow night.)

The end of the first half — specifically, the 43rd minute — brought shots from Uzuni and Torres forcing Cabral saves, and then additional attempts from Dubersarsky, Sánchez, and Nelson that RSL's defense was able to absorb.

RSL managed one more chance before the half, with Guilavogui slipping past Jon Gallagher to head in a pass dangerously close to goal, which Stuver was able to paw away.

After halftime, momentum largely tipped to RSL, with Verde's first real chance of the half coming in mintue 56, but leading to Gallagher overhitting a diagonal cross intended for the box.

But less than a minute later, Brad Stuver got a double save off Sergi Solans, who got gifted a ball from Svatok for a first attempt and then slipped past Svatok for a second attempt off the rebound.

Estévez activated Jorge Alastuey in the 60th minute, subbing him in for Nelson to shift the formation, getting Rosales to play on the left.

The configuration nearly paid off immediately, with Rosales getting off a shot that hit the bar and then dropped to Alastuey, who hesitated before getting off the shot, with a rebound to Ilie and a mishit shot ending the play.

Bell and Dubersarsky later gave way for Mateja Đorđević and Besard Šabović, around minute 70, which RSL immediately answered by getting on two of their most electric players — Victor Olatunji and, for the first time this season, Diego Luna.

Luna made his presence felt in the 87th, getting a shot that nearly reached goal, but Brendan Hines-Ike was able to stab it away standing net to Stuver.

But a minute later, Spierings, in his eighth minute on the field as a RSL player, hit a ball from beyond the 18 after Glad's pass threaded him past Šabović, freeing him for the speculative attempt.

Perhaps too late, Estévez threw Christian Ramírez on to try to get an equalizer, but the ref blew for full time as Verde was in the middle of a final attack.

Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal)

The end-of-first-half pressure on RSL's defense was great to see. My wife, who watched the first half with me (and doesn't share my affinity for soccer), quipped, "It's great they discovered they can play on that side of the field."

Worst Verde moment (that wasn't a goal allowed)

Nelson got a yellow card in the 50th minute for a foul on Xavier Gozo mirroring a foul he got whistled for just several minutes earlier, only this one was perilously close to the edge of the box, fortunately only ending in a botched free kick sailing harmlessly out of bounds.

One thing you might have missed

In the 84th, Rosales had an incredible sequence in which he kept the ball and shielded himself against Gozo's attempted takeaways for a good 20 seconds before finally being able to break free.

One nerdy tidbit

The great majority of Austin FC's shots came in a two-minute window in the first half (minutes 43 and 44) and a two-minute window in the second half (minutes 61 and 62).

Where this fits into the season's narrative

Coming so close to a draw, Austin's now played two away matches, lost them both, and returns home to face LAFC next week before traveling to Miami on the other side of the international break. I warned on today's Emergency Podcast this was a match they needed a result from, because a two-match losing streak can easily turn into a four-match losing streak.

A question we have going into the press conference

Very curious to know what Svatok said about the own goal, and very curious to get Estévez's read on what happened there.
