Verde started without Myrto Uzuni in the roster let alone the starting lineup, even though he was visible in the club's social media photos prior to kickoff. Interim head coach Davy Arnaud did activate his other two designated players, though, getting both Brandon Vázquez and Facundo Torres in, along with Ervin Torres and Jorge Alastuey in key attacking roles. Both Brendan Hines-Ike and Oleksandr Svatok started as subs, with Jon Bell getting the starting nod at center back along with Guilherme Biro and Mikkel Desler. It took a little more than a minute for Verde to get their first shot on goal. It was a Besard Šabović shot from distance easily saved by James Pantemis, but it was more positive early play than the team managed against Toluca three nights prior. It took some time for Verde to get off another shot — not until the 19th minute, in fact — but then six minutes later, after some positive play from the visitors, Šabović slipped a pass to the top of the box where Joseph Rosales was, then he led F-Torres in between two defenders, and he got low to convert the pass into a goal for the lead. Cole Bassett finally got the Timbers' first shot in the 28th minute, but then momentum shifted over to the hosts, though it really only resulted in one additional shot before halftime. Verde came out of halftime finding its form again, getting some attacks into where the heart of the Timbers defense should have been. (See Best Verde moment that wasn't a goal.) The Timbers had a dangerous moment in the 58th minute — their most dangerous up to that point — with an Ari Lassiter free kick that sizzled in toward goal, though not so hot that Verde goalkeeper Brad Stuver couldn't handle it. Timbers coach Martí Cifuentes saw fit in the 62nd minute to sub off starting striker (but not exactly first-choice striker) Gabe Guerra, while Arnaud counted getting Alastuey and Jon Gallagher off for Przemysław Płacheta and Žan Kolmanič. Several minutes later, the hosts won a free kick which Kristoffer Velde tried to bend around the wall, sending it wide. In the 69th minute — the start of the witching hour for late goals let in by the Verde defense leading to points dropped — David Da Costa got a shot off that Stuver had to cradle to safety. Rosales had an opportunity in the 73rd minute to double the lead, but Finn Surman slid in on the attempt to block it successfully. After that, several chances tipped to the Timbers for near goals, but Stuver and his defense hung tough. Arnaud decided it prudent late in the match to make defensive subs, following an earlier move to Brendan Hines-Ike on for Mikkel Desler, getting Svatok on for Jon Bell and Ilie Sánchez on for F-Torres. In the 85th, ironically, Antony's shot was blocked by Hines-Ike, though with an errant arm that — upon video review — was deemed a handball because Hines-Ike's arm was in an unnatural position when Antony's shot clanged off it. Antony took the PK and sent Stuver the wrong way. In stoppage time, Vázquez missed a tap-in chance in front of goal to win the match, but contributed a minute later on the corner kick play that Svatok was able to trundle in. The Timbers had two chances at the end of the match, with Ari Lassiter hitting the post with a shot in the final minute, and then the hosts winning a free kick from a Rosales foul that allowed them one more chance to put the ball in a dangerous area. ## Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal) Šabović had a drive into the box for a 50th-minute shot that went awry, but the confidence on the drive and the willingness to go right into the center of the pitch was good to see. Less than a minute later, Rosales had a similar attack into the center channel resulting in a blocked shot. ## Worst Verde moment (that wasn't a goal allowed) It was unfortunate, but an extended arm in the box is an extended arm in the box, BHI. ## One thing you might have missed Coming out of the halftime break, the commentators noted the Timbers had scored in 11 straight matches. ## One nerdy tidbit Austin's defense held Portland to just 0.03 xG in the first half, per Futi. ## Where this fits into the season's narrative It's just the second road win of the season for Austin FC — both against Cascadia teams — and it helps the squad's playoff cause. While still in 14th, the team's now just five points off the playoff pace and two points behind 13th-place LA and 12th-place Seattle. ## A question we have heading into the press conference We think we know what the answer will be about Uzuni not being put on tonight's roster, but we'll look at how sincere it is. *Verde All Day is a reader-supported online publication covering Austin FC.
