At the Whistle: Austin FC 1, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2
Austin FC got a goal just before halftime on its first shot of the game, but the visitors put in two goals after halftime to likely seal Verde's home-for-the-postseason fate.
In the first of five pretty-much-must-win matches Austin FC played to close out the 2026 season, the hosts got the early lead against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on a gifted goal chance that Myrto Uzuni finished, but then gave up second-half goals to Ryan Gauld and substitute Yadaly Diaby to lose 2-1, all but dooming them to miss the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.
Verde started out with Uzuni, Christian Ramírez, and Brandon Vázquez (by my count, three strikers) in the lineup, but otherwise keeping to much of the usual suspects in their usual spots. Vancouver rolled out with a largely full strength lineup, absent Thomas Müller (out of the lineup entirely), but featuring Guald Brian White, and Emmanuel Sabbi.
The Whitecaps dominated possession early, with 70% in the first seven minutes, but the defenses were able to thwart early goalward attempts, including a sixth-minute Sabbi attempt blocked by Oleksandr Svatok, and a ninth-minute Ramírez cross cut out by a trailing Whitecaps defender before it could get to Vázquez.
Brad Stuver nearly had a fatal giveaway in the 20th minute, hitting a ball that went directly to an unguarded Bruno Caicedo, who hit his free shot well over the bar.
Vancouver's superior team speed allowed them some chances even though Verde seemed to be making more of a concerted effort to defend, including another Caicedo hit in the 32nd with White leading him after taking the ball away from Ervin Torres.
In the 39th, Tate Johnson felt he should've gotten a PK called for being taken down by Ervin Torres in the box, which referee Tori Penso wasn't willing to give. A minute later, with Verde matriculating down the sideline, Johnson got on the ball, passed it toward goal, and it turned out to be an assist to Uzuni, who made good with the gift and put it in for the opening goal.
It took a second more than a minute after play resumed for Vancouver to equalize, with Sabbi heading in a cross for Gauld to head home.
In the 61st, Verde got a chance via a Vázquez header from inside the box that goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka handled ably.
Interim head coach Davy Arnaud aimed to inject some life (and perhaps chaos) into the back line, putting in Guilherme Biro in the 64th minute for Svatok, while the 'Caps countered with Diaby and Ralph Priso.
It didn't take long for Diaby to make an impact, getting a ball at the back left corner of the box in the 71st, with Joseph Rosales only loosely guarding him, and putting in a curler far post that evaded Stuver's reach.
Arnaud answered with a triple sub, putting in Facundo Torres, Jorge Alastuey, and Mikkel Desler for Ramírez, Besard Šabović, and Brendan Hines-Ike.
It appeared Vázquez had a 75th-minute equalizer, but negated it for Vázquez fouling Johnson in the build up. Uzuni then attempted a shot on goal a minute later, sending it over the bar.
White got out on a one-on-one with Stuver in the 79th, but Stuver was able to do enough to distract White into shooting wide.
Arnaud used his final sub in the 82nd, getting Jon Gallagher off for Ilie Sánchez. Verde kept pressing, with Vázquez's 85th-minute header saved by a diving Takoaka, with Alastuey missing a follow-up.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Penso awarded the hosts a corner when Takoaka held on to the ball for too long, but Alastuey went wide with his shot when the ball recycled out to him.
Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal)
Stuver's challenge of White on what looked like a sure dagger goal kept Verde into it.
Worst Verde moment (that wasn't a goal allowed)
A bad Stuver pass nearly leading to a goal for a second match in a row is not a thing I thought I would be writing about in 2026, but here we are.
One thing you might have missed
We're not sure if either was really warranted, but Andres Cubas got a 13th-minute yellow card and Tristan Blackmon got a 33rd-minute yellow card, giving the Whitecaps defense a bit of pause.
One nerdy tidbit
Austin's first shot of the match, following Vancouver's five shots, was Uzuni's opening goal.
Where this fits into the season's narrative
Though the last four matches still seem eminently winnable, that would only bring Verde up to 43 points, on a day when Minnesota surged past them in the table by ending St. Louis' 21-match unbeaten streak. (And that's before Colorado kicked off with a chance to get up 41 points with a win over Portland, and before San Diego kicked off against LA Galaxy who, even with a loss, would stay one rung above Austin.)
A question we have heading into the press conference
Okay, we're still curious about the three striker approach, but we're also curious about the defensive lapses that let the two goals in.
