Austin FC closed out a tumultuous 2026 season at Q2 Stadium on Saturday, giving up an Ari Lassiter goal inside of three minutes and Kristoffer Velde's emphatic second-half goal, leading to a 2-0 loss that sent the Timbers into the playoffs.

With the loss, Verde finish the season on 34 points — its lowest total since the 31 it achieved in its inaugural 2021 season. (Its 34 points is the equivalent of drawing all 34 matches.)

Interim head coach opted for Brad Stuver in goal, ending three straight matches with Damian Las in between the posts. Arnaud also went with just one designated player, starting Christian Ramírez and Micah Burton alongside Brandon Vázquez in the front three, and leaving Facundo Torres and Myrto Uzuni on the bench.

The Timbers didn't take long to get on the board, with Lassiter getting out on a break in the third minute, with Vincent Janssen helping him along with a well-placed pass.

Verde had one of its two best chances of the half about 12 minutes in, with Jon Gallagher chesting down an upfield pass and getting off a shot that caromed off the woodwork — but, cruelly, bouncing down on the goal line and not over it.

The other excellent chance came in the 39th and 40th minute, with Christian Ramírez going just wide from distance with that first attempt, after Verde made it interesting in front of the box, and then again connecting on a Micah Burton cross, with a hot ball in that Timbers goalkeeper James Pantemis had to parry away to preserve the lead.

Verde got the first chance of the second half, with Ramírez heading a ball to Vázquez, trying to get some power on it, which resulted in Vázquez heading the ball over the bar. Velde would finally test Stuver in the 52nd minute, but he was up for it.

Austin FC players peppered the goal from distance around the hour mark, with Guilherme Biro and Jorge Alastuey getting off speculative but impressive shots.

Arnaud took out Oleksandr Svatok in the 64th minute to get Przemysław Płacheta on.

In the 70th, Velde got free with the ball behind the 18 and let loose with one of the best goals scored in Q2 Stadium this season — unfortunately, against Stuver.

More subs followed, with Uzuni getting in for Burton, and Brendan Hines-Ike getting in for Mikkel Desler. Uzuni hit a shot from distance soon after arriving in the match, but Pantemis was able to collect it easily.

Arnaud made one more sub in the 84th minute, pulling Alastuey for Besard Šabović. Uzuni had another attempt on goal a minute later, and that was the last attempt on goal Verde managed this season.

## Best Verde moment (that wasn’t a goal)

Gallagher's attempt would have been a beautiful equalizer.

## Worst Verde moment (that wasn't a goal allowed)

Eric Izoita nearly made it 2-0 in the 8th minute. It was an amazing Stuver save to keep it from going in, but it was some very suspect defense that allowed the shot to come off in the first place.

## One thing you might have missed

On the broadcast, there was discussion of Austin FC still trying to get to MLS Cup, despite coming close in 2022\. *Oh, buddy. It might be a while.*

## One nerdy tidbit

Per Futi, Austin led Portland at the half in possession (57%-33%, with 10% contested), shots (six to three), and xG (0.35 to 0.14).

## Where this fits into the season's narrative

Had I looked into the future back in February, and saw Arnaud coaching a team already eliminated from the playoffs, I'd have a lot of questions, starting with, "What happened to Nico Estévez, and what does Rodolfo Borrell have in the works?" We're now nearly six months removed from the dual firing, and I'm in a place where I'm very ready for the Jim Curtin/Khaled El-Ahmad era to begin in earnest.

This match, while not germane to the narrative that coalesced with the playoff-eliminating loss to RSL last time the team played in Q2, showed that the defense has work to do before the sprint season starts.

## A question we have heading into the press conference

While I won't be at the post-match press conference (having covered the match from New Braunfels after an afternoon of light Wurstfesting), I'm curious about the evolving goalkeeper situation, which included an impolite how-do-you-do from Lassiter early on. Arnaud and Stuver had a curious post-match exchange that I'm not quite sure how to read yet. (But go back to the Apple TV stream to see the several minutes following the final whistle.)
