That changes Wednesday night with the Leagues Cup quarterfinals at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. That's not Toluca's home field, and it's certainly not Austin's home field — it's the field that organizers assigned to Toluca as the "home team" per the tournament's 67-page rulebook. While Toluca isn't technically one of the Liga MX "gigantes," its recent run of success has fomented a debate about a [new "Big Six"](https://en.as.com/soccer/liga-mx-fans-declare-mexicos-new-big-six-and-two-huge-names-didnt-make-the-cut-f202510-n/?ref=verdeallday.com) that includes Toluca. We don't have a Toluca reporter in our virtual Rolodex, but this match gave us the opportunity to reach out to Victor Araiza, currently writing for Leagues Cup (including this [wrap-up of Phase One](https://www.leaguescup.com/news/wrapping-up-phase-one-leon-roars-chicago-on-fire-austin-revives?ref=verdeallday.com) with nice things to say about Verde), who is always reliable for good Liga MX intel. I'm guessing some of it has to do with playing home matches at extreme elevation, but what else contributes to their success? Toluca’s home-field advantage is certainly part of the club’s success. The Estadio Nemesio Diez is not only imposing because of its elevation (\~8,730 ft) but also because the atmosphere created by the home fans makes it one of the most intimidating places to play. Of course, having some of Liga MX’s top talents on your roster never hurts. That combination has helped make Toluca remarkably difficult to beat at home, with the club losing no more than once (if at all) in several recent campaigns. Given this match will be in Harrison, Austin FC catches a bit of a break, but Toluca will still be a handful. Toluca has held a level of success that has led it to 12 Liga MX titles, tied with Chivas for second-most behind Club America. They do not have the popular following of other clubs, but they’re consistently good. ### Based on what you've seen from Toluca in this tournament, do they have what it takes to win? If so, what's the case for it, and if not, why not? With a fully healthy squad, Toluca would likely be the odds-on favorite to win the tournament. The *Diablos Rojos* are missing their top goalscorer **Paulinho**, starting goalkeeper **Luis García**, Mexican national team midfielders **Erick Gutiérrez** and **Marcel Ruiz**, and forwards **Iván “Gacelo” López** and **Santiago Simón**. In short, you can almost complete a formidable XI just from their injury list. But the manager is not injured. **Antonio Mohamed** is one of Liga MX’s most successful coaches, winning five league titles with four different clubs (Tijuana, America, Monterrey). He led Toluca to back-to-back titles in the Clausura 2025 and Apertura 2025, and the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup just a few months ago. “We are going to play with the roster we have and with the players that are here,” [Mohamed said in his press conference](https://www.tolucafc.com/noticias/pese-a-lesiones-somos-favoritos?ref=verdeallday.com) on Tuesday. “With the injuries we have, and with the loss of players, we still consider ourselves favorites in any series we have to play.” Toluca is clearly battle-tested, and if they get past Austin, may have Paulinho back for the closing stretch of the Leagues Cup. ### Alexis Vega and Jesus Gallardo are the best-known names on the team due to their El Tri connections, but who are some X-factor players to watch? **Helinho** (No. 11) is one of Toluca’s must-see players and an undisputed starter. The Brazilian winger is capable of scoring in different ways, and is coming off a free-kick goal over the weekend to add a goal to his two assists in the Apertura 2026\. He also has one goal and one assist in Leagues Cup. Expect him to be involved in the attack. **Federico Viñas** (No. 16) is a recent arrival during the summer transfer window but no stranger to Liga MX. The Uruguayan was previously at Club America (2020–2023) and León (2023-2024), before being loaned to León’s sister club Real Oviedo in Spain.
