For the sixth straight year, Austin FC plays a completely inconsequential (to its playoff chances, that is) Decision Day match on what's expected to be a rainy evening in Q2 Stadium. However, it's a quite consequential match for Verde's opponents, Portland Timbers FC, who can secure a playoff spot with a win and have a number of other scenarios with a draw or even a loss.

From MLS:

OG Verde player Jon Gallagher — who scored the first goal by an Austin FC player in Q2 Stadium against the 2021 version of these Timbers — sounded very ready for Match 34 and the rest that will come after in Thursday's press conference, but provided perspective on how he and his teammates will come out.

"We work so hard to live this dream out of being professional soccer players," he said. "It's about having the pride of wanting to compete, and regardless of what's on the line, being proud of whatever badge you're representing. And I think we have a duty to ourselves and the ones that love us to go out and put out a good performance and make people proud, and obviously try to end this."

To give us perspective on what Portland's doing — a lengthy winless streak, followed by a three-match winning streak to put it on the verge of the playoffs (essentially the opposite of what Austin's just done) — we checked in with Sam Svilar of [Stumptown Footy](https://stumptown-footy.ghost.io/?ref=verdeallday.com), currently not just covering the Timbers' postseason possibilities, but the Thorns' actual postseason in NWSL action this weekend.

To the questions!

### The Timbers' scenario for the making the playoffs primarily involves beating or drawing Austin (though there are also some backing in scenarios with other teams losing) ... how confident are you that you'll be covering a Timbers playoff game this season?

Way more confident than I was a month ago! The turnaround from Portland has been pretty remarkable over the past two weeks, and that's saying something for a club that has made dramatic late-season rescue jobs their M.O. in recent years.

The way that this team is playing right now is full of confidence, first and foremost. The belief that they can get a result against any team has rose dramatically over the past three matches. The players who need to step up are stepping up, key players are returning from injury, and it sure feels like the stars are aligning.

But the Timbers have been here before and royally fumbled it. Portland has entered Decision Day in control of their own fate for the past four years straight, with the chance to either book a playoff spot or avoid the play-in game all in front of them. And they have lost quite literally every single time. This team is no stranger to blowing it right at the finish line. So as much as I want to be fully confident in them getting the job done ... man, I've watched enough Timbers soccer to know that disappointment is always lurking right around the corner.

### Diego Chara announced he'll be retiring after the 2027 sprint season ... what has he meant to the Timbers, and how much does he still figure into how they play?

He means more than I think we can ever say, and I'm so glad that we get the sprint season to fully celebrate and appreciate him. If there ever was a "Mr. Timbers," it would be Diego Chara. He is the last remaining original player from the inaugural 2011 MLS squad, and more incredibly, he has been an integral part of the team for every year he's been in Portland.

The fact that he's not only playing up to this point but also starting and serving key roles at key times is a testament to his work ethic, passion for the club, and longevity (and his regen regiment). He's not the day-to-day starter he once was, nor is he the all-consuming field destroyer he has been in seasons' past. But he can still start a match and give you a good shift. Through injuries and uncertainty this year he has been a constant in the middle of a storm, and that is perhaps is biggest impact for the club: being the anchor that holds it all down when tumult is everywhere.

Oh, and he is still good for at least a yellow card a game – one of his favorite streaks and accomplishments, by his own admission!

### The Timbers are on a season-salvaging three-match win streak after going seven winless right before that. How have they turned it around?

New head coach Marti Cifuentes has been laying the groundwork and planting the seeds of his possession-focused style of play since he came to town in the summer, and now it appears it's finally starting to take root. At the start of his tenure, Portland's insistence on trying to playing with the ball no matter what put them in bad spots on poor turnovers, and their discomfort and unfamiliarity with Cifuentes' new pressing scheme made for some pretty egregious starts to matches. There were flashes, but it never quite felt like it was going to click.

But then ... it did. Almost spontaneously, it all came together for Portland. Their ability to control the ball and flow of games became better and better, and then they exploded by scoring nine goals in three games, after a stretch of just four goals in five games.

The turnaround has been built by the system, and carried on the backs of Portland's Designated Players, Kristoffer Velde and David Da Costa. Both players are rounding into form at the perfect time, and Velde particularly providing a constant threat in front of goal has helped open things up for the rest of Portland's midfield.

Speaking of the midfield, another unsung hero who might become a household name before long is Eric Izoita, the 19-year-old homegrown midfielder who has taken the pitch by storm. The kid hasn't looked out of place at all, and more than that, he is providing the genuine two-way presence the Timbers have desperately needed in the middle of the field. He's earned Cifuentes' trust and starts, and looks like he might just be the X factor Portland has needed to make it all come together.
