A tale of two Diegos: A thought exercise regarding chance creation

Some Austin FC fans have been clamoring for a true heliocentric chance creator. There's an argument to be made that the club already has one.

Real Salt Lake's Diego Luna is among the most intriguing choices that have emerged for the Austin FC faithful engaging in new player wishcasting. Forget that Luna is arguably the team's best player, certainly the face of its franchise, and that designated player Diogo Gonçalves might be on the way out, leaving Rwan Cruz as the team's only DP. (Both DPs were disappointing in 2025.)

There is another Diego out there with an uncertain future — and one that Verde fans know quite well. When making its end-of-year roster decisions last October, the LA Galaxy announced the front office was "in talks" with Diego Fagúndez, and as of this writing, he's not listed on the team's official roster page.

Would a prodigal son-style return to Austin for Fagúndez make sense? He was an outstanding chance creator in 2022, leading the team with 15 assists, and he was tasked with chance creation in 2025 as Riqui Puig was out with a knee injury — which will also, sadly, be the case in 2026.

Let's explore what they might be in 2026 (hypothetically in Verde), based on what they were in 2025, with the understanding that neither player seems to me a likely candidate to be Verde this season.
