It’s true that Austin FC drew by the same 2-2 margin against the Philadelphia Union last night. That’s the same 2-2 margin as their home draw to St. Louis City SC last week, and it also happened with the defense giving up an equalizer after Verde went up 2-1.
But this wasn’t the gut punch that last week’s draw was, in part because the shot discrepancy, at 17-13, wasn’t as wide a gulf as prior weeks. There are signs, despite Verde looking for its first win of 2024 after four contests, that things are improving.
At least, that’s what head coach Josh Wolff is taking from the result.
“I think, as the game went on, the guys took in the information a little bit better,” Wolff assessed. He noted that while the first half brought concerns that have manifested in other first halves the team’s played this season, they were able to adjust and get forward better as the match progressed.
“Trust me when I say that we bring this to light in training and bring this to light and video reviews,” he observed. “We bring this to light before they go out in the field, but we have to go out and execute the ideas of what we try and what we train.”
