2019 was a weird year for the Houston Dynamo.
It was coming off a season in which it’d won the U.S. Open Cup, its first major trophy since winning back-to-back MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007, then still fresh from its move to San Jose. It started the 2019 season 7-2-2, the best start to date in its history.
Then came an epic collapse.
The Dynamo went 2-11-1 in its next 14 matches, falling six points behind the playoff line in the West, and the front office decided that Wilmer Cabrera was no longer the right manager to helm Houston.
Enter native Texan Davy Arnaud (who grew up in Nederland and played college soccer in Canyon at West Texas A&M), who was elevated from his assistant coaching position to lead the Dynamo for its remaining nine matches. Arnaud was not able to steer the Dynamo back to the playoffs, going 3-5-1 in his stint to bring the team to a 10th-place finish in the conference.
