Austin FC announced its 14-match sprint season schedule as part of a leaguewide announcement. The season will start against a rival and end against another.
As part of a league-wide drop on Thursday, Austin FC released its 2027 sprint season schedule.
The 14-match mini-season, going from February 20 to May 8 next year, will serve as a bridge from the current season to the 2027-28 season, anticipated to start in July, as Major League Soccer joins most major world soccer leagues in implementing a fall-to-spring schedule. (In MLS' case, it's actually more of a midsummer to late spring schedule, but it allows MLS teams to make better use of the summer transfer window serving as the primary time in which teams acquire new players.)
For the sprint season, a key will be which teams are drawn home and away, since with 14 games, each team only plays each conference rival once rather than twice.
Here's what Austin drew (all times CT, home opponents italicized):
Saturday, Feb. 20, 7 pm:vs. FC Dallas
Saturday, Feb. 27, 3 pm: at St. Louis City SC
Wednesday, March 3, 7 pm: vs. Colorado Rapids
Saturday, March 6, 7 pm:vs. Seattle Sounders FC
Saturday, March 13, 9 pm: at Portland Timbers FC
Saturday, March 20, 9 pm: at San Diego FC
Saturday, March 27, 7 pm:vs. LAFC
Saturday, April 3, 7 pm: at Houston Dynamo FC
Wednesday, April 7, 7 pm: vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Saturday, April 10, 9 pm: at Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Saturday, April 17, 7 pm:vs. Sporting Kansas City
Saturday, April 24, 7 pm: at Minnesota United FC
Saturday, May 1, 7 pm: vs. Real Salt Lake
Saturday, May 8, 7 pm: at LA Galaxy
Some things to note:
Verde go on the road against three of the four current top four teams in the West.
Though there are less road trip options to choose from in the sprint season, San Diego in March, Vancouver in April, and Minnesota in late April all look like lovely vacations (but wear layers).
Austin only plays two midweek matches in the schedule, and they're both at home, though the San Jose home match is sandwiched between Houston and Vancouver away trips.
Matches have a 7 pm start time — perhaps this is not just a sprint season one-off from the typical 7:30 start time that teams throughout the league have been operating with in past seasons.
